Fountain Care |
 |
Caring for your fountain is easy. Once set up, add water as evaporation occurs.
Assembly: There are four major parts to each fountain: the basin, the main portion of the fountain from which water flows, the submersible pump including plastic tubing and the water. Accent stones are only for aesthetics and to vary the sound and pressure of water flow.
1. Place the pump inside of the hollow top portion of the fountain with the end of the plastic tubing opposite the pump inserted into the hole in the top of the fountain. The water pressure can be adjusted by turning the shutter value to the up and down position or left and right position to increase or decrease the size of the hole from which the water can flow.
2. Place the top of the fountain, with pump inside, into the basin bowl. Ensure that the base of the pump sits flat agains the basin bowl. It may be necessary to hold the top of the tubing in place while performing this step. Allow the wire of the pump to fit into the notch in the bottom of the fountain to ensure the fountain is sitting flat in the basin.
3. While the pump is unplugged, fill the basin bowl with water, enough to ensure that the area of the pump that draws in water is submerged. If your fountain has tiers, fill the tiers with water as well. If accent stones are used, leave enough space so that the addition of stones does not cause the water level to raise too high. The best type of water to use is filtered or distilled water. Tap water may be used but may require more frequent cleaning of the pump filter and fountain.
4. Plug pump into electrical outlet.
5. Unplug when not attended so as not to allow fountain to run out of water and damage pump.
6. Add or replace water as necessary.
Maintenance: The more frequently the water is changed, the less often the fountain will need to be cleaned for residue. When residue begins to build, usually about once a month, depending on type of water used, it is time to clean the fountain and pump.
1. Remove the pump from the ceramic fountain and empty any water and remove accent stones.
2. The ceramic fountain and basin can be cleaned in a number of ways. It can be placed in the dishwasher, be cleaned with soapy water or a bathroom cleaner. If using the fountain to water pets, clean frequently and as you would any other pet bowl, with a safe cleanser.
3. Remove the plastic tubing from the pump and clean with soapy water. Rinse thoroughly. Replacement tubing can be found in the plumbing section of any hardware store. (Be sure to bring the original with you, as there are many sizes.)
4. Remove the filter from the bottom of the pump by snapping off. Clean any residue in the filter and reattach.
Troubleshooting: If you are having trouble getting your fountain to run, ensure the following:
The filter is clean and free of debris The base of the pump is flat against the basin bowl The fountain has sufficient water The plastic tubing is free of kinks, holes and debris (such as accent stones) The end of the plastic tubing opposite the pump is fitting snugly into the opening in the top of the fountain.
Splashing: If excess splashing occurs:
Reduce the amount of water in the basin bowl Adjust the accent stones to reduce water pressure Lower the plastic tubing which emerges from the top of the fountain. The higher the tubing rises from the hole, the greater the pressure. Adjust the pump pressure by partially closing the shutter valve.
Replacement Pumps: The pump in your recently purcased fountain is a Rio 90 or 180, specifically designed for tabletop fountains or small ponds. A replacement pump can be ordered via the internet at www.graystonecreations.com, any other reputable distributor, or you may contact me. Please note that the pump you will receive includes many parts that are not all used for your fountain. Compare what is currently attached to your pump to the parts included with the new pump.
If your fountain was purchased prior to 2005, you have a pump from a manufacturer that has gone out of business. A Rio 90 fountain pump can be used in its place. Because the pumps are different in size, the length of the plastic tubing will probably need to be adjusted. Please contact me if you have any questions.
